Known internationally as a curator amongst the worldʼs most cutting edge DJs, producers, and musical movements Wesley Pentz (better known as DIPLO) has experienced a variety of successes. His most popular track “Express Yourself” (featuring Nicky Da B) smashed dancefloors globally and introduced Brazilian baile funk, Angolan Kuduro, and other marginalized music to clubs around the world. Check out his latest track in collaboration with Steve Aoki and Deorro “Freak”.
As a DJ, Diplo is characterized by his eclectic, often 80s-oriented mashups, mixtapes, and live sets. On his full-length solo effort Florida, however, his sound is closer to sample-based cinematic instrumental hip hop, not unlike the work of DJ Shadow.
Born in Mississippi and raised across the southern United States, Diplo picked up much of the local culture while growing up there. Music styles such as dirty south, crunk and miami bass are now trademark ingredients of the Hollertronix output. Pentz’s solo work is also influenced by Southern Gothic and other southern literature. Additionally, world music is a strong musical influence on Diplo, especially baile funk which he encountered whilst traveling in Brazil and has been the influence for his many twerk style productions.
In 2009 Pentz teamed with frequent collaborator Dave Taylor (aka Switch) to release the futuristic dancehall album “Guns Donʼt Kill People… Lazers Do,” under the guise of Major Lazer. Diplo is also a regular guest on BBC’s Radio 1 and 1Xtra broadcast and has released several mixes titled Diplo and Friends, which can be listened to in their entirety here.
The last few years have been spent touring the club/festival circuit and collaborating with some of the most notorious names in the business; Santigold, Lilʼ Jon “U Don’t Like Me” and Missy Elliot “Boy Oh Boy”, while remixing works by Beck, Gwen Stefani, Radiohead, Britney Spears “Circus” and countless others.
More recently, Pentz started his own label, Mad Decent, signing Brazilian baile funk group Bonde do Role, DJ Blaqstarr, Zeds Dead, Riff Raff, and Bro Safari, just to name a few. Since garnering a tremendous following the label has been touring the United States with their Mad Decent Block Party Tour; which have shown massive success showcasing everyone on the imprint.
